Bio
Dr. Socorro Zaragoza is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages Cultures and Humanities at Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Zaragoza teaches all levels of Spanish language as well as Latin American Literature and culture classes. She earned a BA in Foreign Language Education from the Universidad de Colima in Mexico, and her Master’s and PhD from Purdue University with a focus on Spanish and Latin American Studies. She is a longtime advocate of equity for diverse groups stemming from her areas of interest for scholarship on Afro-Hispanic Culture and Literature as well as her commitment to representing minorities both on EKU’s campus and in the community.
Dr. Zaragoza has served as Co-Chair of the EKU Diversity Committee, board member of AFA (Africa-African American) Program, founded the Latino Student Association on EKU’s campus, and has worked to achieve higher retention rates of minority students through her advising and mentorship. She was a part of the grant writing team for K’LEA (Kentucky Latino Education Alliance.) Dr. Zaragoza is also working with EKU Freshman Minority Academy. She is currently the Diversity Chief Officer for College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences; Dr. Zaragoza remains active in a plethora of efforts for student engagement, satisfaction, and retention. On January 29, 2021, she was named EKU University Fellow by President Dr. David McFaddin.
