The Bobby Verdugo and Yoli Ríos Bilingual Peer Mentor and Tutoring Center, also known as “El Centro,” was inaugurated in July of 2016 in room 120 of McCreary Hall. In the following year, El Centro expanded into the entirety of McCreary Hall and was renamed as the Bobby Verdugo and Yoli Ríos Bilingual Peer Mentor and Tutoring Center in September of 2018.

The Bobby Verdugo and Yoli Ríos Bilingual Peer Mentor and Tutoring Center was named after Chicano/a civil rights activists Bobby Verdugo and Yoli Ríos. In 1968, both were key organizers of the East L.A. Walkouts at five schools, which were portrayed in the HBO Documdrama, “Walk out.” At El Centro, we believe that strength is found in diversity. In the spirit of Bobby Verdugo and Yoli Rios, this space ensures equity and access. They “walked out” so other underrepresented students could walk in.
